Vitamin A — retinol from liver and raw cod liver oil
Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body uses for vision, skin, immune system, and cell renewal. At Naturshopen, our Vitamin A comes from real raw ingredients — freeze-dried grass-fed beef liver from Nordic Kings and raw cold-pressed cod liver oil from Rosita and FIQ — not synthetic retinyl esters.
What is Vitamin A?
Active Vitamin A (retinol) is found in animal foods such as liver, egg yolk, and fish liver oil. Beta-carotene from plants can theoretically be converted to retinol, but the conversion is inefficient and varies greatly between individuals.
How much per day?
The EFSA recommends a daily reference intake of 800 µg RE for adults. Pregnant women should not exceed 3,000 µg/day from supplements according to the Swedish Food Agency — one teaspoon of cod liver oil is normally within the safe range and also provides natural Vitamin D.
Retinol or beta-carotene?
Retinol is the finished, biologically active form. Beta-carotene is a precursor that the body needs to break down — in cases of thyroid problems, low bile production, or certain genes, the conversion is sluggish. Wholefood sources like liver provide retinol directly.
How we choose a Vitamin A source
We prioritize wholefood origin (liver, liver oil), traceable animals (preferably grass-fed), raw cold-pressed or gently freeze-dried processing, and a clean ingredient list without unnecessary fillers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take Vitamin A if I am pregnant?
Discuss the dosage with your midwife. The Swedish Food Agency advises against high doses, but moderate amounts from cod liver oil are considered safe and also contribute Vitamin D and omega-3.
Are liver capsules better than vitamin pills?
Liver provides Vitamin A along with B12, copper, iron, and CoQ10 in natural proportions — a wholefood package that synthetic tablets do not recreate.
How do I store cod liver oil?
Cold and dark. An opened bottle keeps best in the refrigerator. Oxidized oil tastes rancid — discard it then.
